Linkin Park – One More Light, Song analysis, and Figurative language.

Lyrics

Should've stayed, were there signs, I ignored?

Can I help you, not to hurt, anymore?

We saw brilliance, when the world, was asleep

There are things that we can have, but can't keep

If they say

Who cares if one more light goes out?

In a sky of a million stars

It flickers, flickers

Who cares when someone's time runs out?

If a moment is all we are

We're quicker, quicker

Who cares if one more light goes out?

Well I do

The reminders pull the floor from your feet

In the kitchen, one more chair than you need oh

And you're angry, and you should be, it's not fair

Just 'cause you can't see it, doesn't mean it, isn't there

If they say

Who cares if one more light goes out?

In a sky of a million stars

It flickers, flickers

Who cares when someone's time runs out?

If a moment is all we are

We're quicker, quicker

Who cares if one more light goes out?

Well I do

Who cares if one more light goes out?

In a sky of a million stars

It flickers, flickers

Who cares when someone's time runs out?

If a moment is all we are

We're quicker, quicker

Who cares if one more light goes out?

Well I do

Well I do

The young man asked which way she had gone.

Theme and Subject

One More Light is the seventh studio album from a rock band from United States Linkin Park. The album was launched on May 19, 2017, and was created by Warner Bros. This song is the last album sung by Chester Bennington. The length of this song is 4:15 minutes. The preface of Linkin Park’s “One More Light” is the band memorializing a companion by the title of Amy Zaret who had suddenly died. Appropriately the verses themselves are intensely centered on the concept of passing. In any case, this is not a grieving melody, and in reality, can be seen as the opposite. Many people think that Linkin Park doesn't usually make songs that are mellow or sad, they usually carry the rock and hard genre. However, in fact, this song can actually be accepted by the wider community, such as fans or connoisseurs of pop genre music. And, this song is also dedicated to the vocalist, Chester Bennington. Chester Bennington died after he finished his “One More Light” tour in Europe. This song is like a message to his fans not to be sad after he passed away, and the reason why I took it as a message is underneath this paragraph.

After I read some references, the topic or subject of this song can be concluded as someone who wants to encourage his/her friends after losing someone who had an important role and position in his/her heart, and life. The songwriter emphasizes that in this world nothing lasts forever, but only temporarily, destiny determines when "something/someone" will be lost. Furthermore, in the lyrics, who cares when someone's time runs out? If a moment is all we are, it can be interpreted that losing someone we love is fate and determination, but we should not be too sad about it, because there are memories that will last forever. This song wants to embrace people who unfortunately lost someone who they love and care about, and we can find it more in the lyrics beneath,

The reminders pull the floor from your feet

In the kitchen, one more chair than you need oh

And you're angry, and you should be, it's not fair

Just 'cause you can't see it, doesn't mean it, isn't there

In the lyrics above, the songwriter wants to say that it’s okay if angry while you are losing someone, and angry is a part of mourning. The next lyrics, Just 'cause you can't see it, doesn't mean it, isn't there, again it’s about when someone dies or gone, you still can feel their presence by the memories and it doesn’t mean they are gone forever just because they cannot be seen by us. Meanwhile, if we back to the beginning lyrics, Should've stayed, were there signs, I ignored? Can I help you, not to hurt, anymore? these sentences here mean that the songwriter is caring about his/her friend and talking about almost a few occurrences or signs, which he overlooked, and he/she asked to they friend in order to know why his/her friend is sad. The songwriter wrote it like he/she has hurt the other individual. So can he/she offer assistance to the other individual in order not to harm him/her any longer.

We saw brilliance, when the world, was asleep

There are things that we can have, but can't keep

In the sentences above, the writer wants to emphasize that nothing lasts forever in this world. Yet it’s not because we can’t keep it but more like when the time has come, we cannot push it much more. Also, we can take lessons from our nadir just like a light with brilliance quality and light which has hope for us. In the middle of the song, there are beautiful sentences,

Who cares if one more light goes out?

In a sky of a million stars

The meaning is, when we lost someone, we don’t need to be like over amid sadness, because there are still lots of good people around us even though still cannot replace, he/she who has gone.

Figurative Language:

1.      Personification

·         We saw brilliance when the world was asleep,

(Suhendi, 2017:8) describe Personification as giving the attributes of a human being to an animal, an object, or a concept. Then, this sentence above is using personification because asleep is one of the humans and animals do, and the world is a lifeless thing they are not alive.

2.      Hyperbole

·         In a sky of millions star?

·         Who cares when someone’s time runs out.

Hyperbole is some kind of exaggeration of words. Within the sentence over, the word "millions stars" is shown the use of Hyperbole. It is an exaggeration since it is impossible for humans can count the number of stars within the sky. In this case, the vocalist wants to communicate how we are present and ended up as an individual who cares about the surrounding circumstances. Hyperbole found on line nine “time runs out”. Because time can never run out from our life, so it’s an exaggeration of words.

3.      Repetition

·         We are quicker, quicker, Well I do, Well I do

Repetition is a literary device that involves intentionally using a word or phrase for effect, two or more times in a speech or written work. For repetition to be noticeable, the words or phrases should be repeated within close proximity of each other. (literarydevices.net). Based on that definition, it’s clear that this song includes  Repetition, we can find it in most parts of the song.
